Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) claimed that a man who allegedly shot two Democratic lawmakers and had a hit list that included abortion providers was not actually conservative.

Cruz appeared on Tuesday’s installment of The Source on CNN, where he alleged that only left-wingers are engaging in political violence. His comments came less than a week after the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk in Utah. Kirk’s alleged assailant is a 22-year-old who accused Kirk of spreading hate.

“It is only one side that justifies this violence,” said Cruz, a supporter of President Donald Trump, who called Jan. 6 rioters “great patriots” before pardoning them.

Cruz added that political violence is strictly “a left-wing problem.”

“How can you argue that?” host Kaitlan Collins asked. “There have been other acts of political violence as well when it comes to targeting Democrats. I mean, we’ve seen that with a lawmaker who was killed in Minnesota this summer alongside her husband.”

In June, Minnesota Democratic House Speaker Melissa Hortman (D), her husband, and her dog were shot and killed. Another lawmaker, state Sen. John Hoffman, and his wife were also shot, but survived. Prosecutors say the shooter was 57-year-old Vance Boelter and stated that he had a hit list containing the names of Democratic officials in multiple states, as well as some abortion providers.

Cruz interrupted Collins to claim the alleged killer was simply “deranged” and not a conservative.

“The assassin there was not a right-wing assassin acting on a political motive,” Cruz claimed, before citing Boelter’s reappointment to a state workforce board by Democratic Governor Tim Walz. “The assassin there was someone who had been an appointee of Tim Walz, and he was a deranged lunatic.”

A spokesperson for Walz at the time said the governor appoints thousands of people to various boards and agencies. There is no evidence that Walz and Boelter knew each other particularly well.
