Man kidnapped and sexually assaulted 5-year-old girl in Taylor County, police say

GRAFTON, W.Va. (WBOY) — A Grafton man has been arrested and is facing charges after officers say that he kidnapped and sexually assaulted a young girl in the woods of Taylor County.
According to a criminal complaint, on Sept. 26, officers responded to West Main Street in Grafton near Grafton Manor after the callers reported that their child had been taken out of the yard of their home. The parents said that they had the girl back, but that they had found her at an apartment across the street with two men.

When officers arrived on the scene, they spoke with the child, a 5-year-old girl, as well as her parents. The mother told officers that the victim had previously mentioned that one of the suspects “said that he was my dad.” The victim also gave a description of the suspect, later identified as Clinton Beavers, 44, of Grafton, officers said.
While speaking with the victim, officers also learned that Beavers “physically picked up the child and carried her” and that despite the victim telling him to put her down, Beavers instead told her to “be quiet” and carried her “across the street and into the ‘forest,'” the complaint said. At that point, the victim said that Beavers “took her pants off and pulled his pants down and ‘touched her.'” The victim said the next thing she remembered was when she was “running and yelling for help.”
Following the interview, the victim was taken to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown for a Sexual Assault Forensic Examination (SANE), the complaint said. Officers then spoke with witnesses outside Grafton Manor, who said they saw a girl run from the woods behind the building and call for help before she found and ran to her mother.
Officers said they confirmed the witness statements using camera footage and also learned that once the victim ran to her mother, they saw Beavers exit the Grafton Manor building and “run off into the woods.” Officers noted that Beavers matched the previous description of the suspect.
The SANE examiner told officers that the examination found evidence of the victim being assaulted, the complaint said.
The victim also told the examiner that the assault took place at a location that had gray walls, but wasn’t inside a building. Officers noted that a nearby cove with 10-foot-high cinder block walls and electrical meters matched this description, the complaint said.
At around 1:15 a.m., Beavers was found and picked up by officers after they obtained a search warrant for his blood, as well as swabs of his mouth, penis and under his fingernails. Beavers was then taken to the Grafton Police Department for questioning, where officers said that he was “very evasive in answering,” saying multiple times that he “didn’t want to talk about what happened.”
Beavers has been charged with kidnapping and first-degree sexual assault. He is being held in the Tygart Valley Regional Jail on no bond.
