A Washington State woman is recovering after a stranger allegedly told her she was from an "inferior race" before biting her forehead in an attack that left her with permanent injuries.
The 36-year-old victim identified herself as Diana Gonzalez to KOMO News.
Gonzalez told police she was walking to a convenience store near her job in downtown Seattle on the afternoon of Sept. 18 when the suspect allegedly threw a food wrapper at her as she passed, according to a press release from the Seattle Police Department.
Police said Gonzalez asked the woman why she threw the wrapper.
The woman responded, "You're the inferior race," before hurling a homophobic slur at Gonzalez, the release claims.
"The woman then stood up and spit on the victim before grabbing her and pulling her to the ground," police alleged. "While the two women were on the ground, the suspect sunk her teeth into the victim's forehead and bit out a chunk of flesh about 1 inch in diameter, causing significant bleeding."
A nearby witness saw the attack and tried to separate the women, according to police.
The suspect then fled, and the witness followed her before flagging down a King County Marshal who was working at the courthouse, police said.
Responding officers found a "bloody sidewalk" and a piece of Gonzalez's flesh that the suspect had allegedly spit into a grate, according to the release.
In an interview with KOMO News published Thursday, Sept. 24, Gonzalez called the incident a "totally random attack."
"I can't believe she bit a piece of my face off," she told the outlet. "That's the main thing that is still shocking. I can't believe it."
Police said Gonzalez, who was taken to a local hospital for treatment, suffered permanent injuries and now requires surgery.
The 36-year-old suspect was arrested by Seattle police on suspicion of a hate crime assault, they said. She was named in charging documents filed by the King County Prosecuting Attorney's Office as Kamilia Chadli, KOMO News reported.
Chadli is being held on $150,000 bail after being charged with second-degree assault, according to the outlet. It's unclear whether she has entered a plea or retained an attorney who can speak on her behalf.
Prosecutors have not said whether they will pursue the case as a hate crime, despite police describing the alleged attack as such.
