Remember: Half the country thinks like Trump: Racist, xenophobe, isolationist, backwardly religious, nativist... illiterate ignorant peasants.

Recently, i Paper published an opinion piece titled, "Trump's cruelty has gone too far – and America will punish him."
In the article, writer Sarah Baxter particularly called out Donald Trump's policies on immigration, ICE detainments, and the president's promise to “permanently pause migration from all third-world countries” after the shooting of two National Guard members
A few days ago, the article was shared on Reddit, where it received well over 1,000 responses.
Initially, commenters struggled with Baxter's titular claim that "America will punish him." One person wrote, "I think you're underestimating the amount of Americans who are all in on the cruelty."

"You're adorable if you honestly believe that," said another. "He's a reflection of what and who the American people who voted for him actually are."

"It is hard to believe that we have put up with it this far," another quipped. "Trump is so stupid and profoundly damaged. He brings so much shame to the office of the President, and so much shame upon our nation."

Some went so far as to say they believe Trump has done irreparable damage. One person wrote, "I believe we underestimated just how much our entire government relied on people with respect for the institution & a dedication to living up to their oath of office in order to survive."
"If a political party captures all 3 branches and just decides to let one branch take the steering wheel, We the People have practically no recourse until the next election. The minority party have little to no ability to apply the breaks and stop the slide into fascism and theism or whatever the ruling party has decided to do."

"It's going to take generations to undo his damage."

"This man will die without ever having faced consequences."

And people from outside the US also shared their takes:
"your country has become a massive joke," one person added. "I have visited many times over the last 20 or so years (up until 2023) and loved every minute of it. Now - you couldn't pay me enough to set foot there, given even your own citizens are being treated like shit."

"You are not even a year into this Presidential term and it feels like 100 years," they continued. "The damage that Trump has done is immense, a lot of it is irreversible, and you will never be trusted again on the world stage, no matter who is President next."
"Not a day goes by without hearing about something Trump or his slippery administration is up to; it's total chaos, and like having permanent whiplash from being pulled from one crisis to another. I'm almost surprised your country functions at all!"
"From my perspective your only hope is to kneecap this administration in the midterms," they concluded. "There seems to be a massive upwelling of hatred for what Trump is doing, especially when he is so easily manipulated by those around him."
"If Democrats don't get control of the House or the Senate, it's over. Democracy of any kind will be gone."
