Most Americans are conjuring up chance hoping that Trump's brain atrophies faster than his determination to ruin America once and for all.
All the inane policies he is deliberately implementing could become precedent in the future, but deep down reveal desperation and a no-return posture on the future of the United States. He is going so far out of the norms that have guided this country for 250 years that one suspects he, and his followers and potential successors, have given up on the America we've known.
Whatever it is that they think they want to "save" and "rescue" - namely the supremacy of the white settler immigrants over all the other more recent immigrants - will inevitably come back to bite them. More to the point, the pivot he is enshrining in the legal and constitutional framework and infrastructure that have protected the country by restraining previous outliers, might become standard practice.
Imagine Democrats in the white house, congress and the supreme court, say 4, 8, 12 years down the line. It is bound to happen by simple random statistical happenstance, even if the current Democrats do not fight back. That future president may, if he chooses, act and behave like Trump with vindictiveness, lawlessness, cruelty and autocracy. He could reject the results of elections, he could fire statisticians because he believes "their" numbers are rigged. He could deploy the National Guard and the Marines to red states, he could deploy some equivalent of ICE to arrest and detain white people in the streets on suspicion of domestic white supremacist terrorism, he could sue all his former rivals for any petty reason.... All the abnormal things Trump is doing stand to become normal for his successors of the other side.
But then imagine that this does actually happen, and the 4-8-12-year cycle turns around and brings republicans back to government, and they too can embark on the Trump savagery program again.
You can see now how Trump's rule can destroy American democracy forever because it sets the country on an irreversible path of cycles of vengeance and retribution, with the laws and policies radically changing every cycle, leading to further instability and unpredictability. And that is precisly why the founding fathers cemented all the constraints to unlimited unrestrained power in the constitution that Trump is presently violating and refusing to abide by.
If Trump does indeed establish all these precedents in such a manner that his future successors of the other side can also use them against his own side, he would have destroyed American democracy.
So why do all the republicans follow him blindly with very few dissenters? Because deep down, they know that America's evolution over the past two centuries or so is inexorably taking the country away from the supremacy of the first white european stock settlers. Immigration from Europe could not have continued ad aeternum. Slavery could not have continued ad aeternum. The increased speeds of communication and transportation have enabled globalization, which in turn exposes countries to outside influences and changing mores, customs andd traditions.
It is so idiotic of white European-stock Americans to think they can maintain the status quo forever. So they either are genuinely collectively stupid or they are deliberately screwing the system because they know they are losing and have something else in mind, something that Project 2525 seems to aim for.
But a white fortress America can never function and succeed as an island. The greatest powers and empires throughout human history have inevitably attracted their own demise. Take the Roman Empire. It lasted for centuries, going from a democratic republic to an empire because of people like Trump. But as the city on a hill becomes attractive and claims to be fair, everyone wants to be part of it: former slaves, citizens from oulying provinces under Roman occupation, the blond blue-eyed barbarians from northern Europe...everyone wanted to be a Roman citizen, just like everyone in our time wants to become a US citizen.
Take the French and British empires. They too lasted centuries, controlling most of the world. They told their colonized geographies that they too were citizens of the empire and were entitled to the same rights as the metropolitan citizens. And so, the colonized moved en masse to the metropolis and a process of modification began.
What empires fail to see is that the colonizer inevitably becomes a victim of the colonized, in a natural process of re-equilibration. America is a colonizer, not as much with boots on the ground because, as mentioned earlier, communications and transportation have pre-empted the need for that. Today, the American empire dominates the world with money and long distance weaponry. But that does not change the processes described above.
The inexorable re-equilibration by the dominated is under way, and the dominant white settler community of America has now to deal with all these other people to whom it made promises and claims. Promises of an American dream. Promises of democracy and fair play. Promises of equality under the law..... But white settler America cannot satisfy or fulfill these promises, lest it loses its dominant position. And Donald Trump, in his innate stupidity, is exposing this chasm.
As the Trump "experiment" is still in its early phases, one hopes that his age, ill health, and promising dementia will somehow tame him before the damages he is doing to the country reach a point of no return.
