As far as the Europeans - who created Israel after massacring their own Jews during WWII and sent the the rest of them to a new "homeland" in Palestine - are concerned, Israel
is now like an ungrate bastard child lashing out at its adoptive parents. For Europeans, Israel has become a rogue outlaw state that violates every western value and every UN resolution- except of course the one that created it in 1947. It is a barbaric regime that kills innocent civilians right and left, that kills journalists and medical teams, that bombs hospitals and schools, and that is terrorizing the mostly European soldiers of the United Nations force in south Lebanon (UNIFIL). The US State Department should create a new list - Terrorist States - with Israel as its inaugural member since its conduct surpasses the criteria for joining the list of State Sponsors of Terrorism.
So now, as the problem is blowing up in their faces and they fear the reprisals of the Arab-Muslim world and the global South that holds them responsible for the barbaric genocide of Palestinians, the Europeans are calling for halting weapons shipment to Israel, considering sanctions on extermist terrorist right-wing Israeli ministers, imposing trade sanctions and joining the BDS movement, withdrawing their investments from joint ventures with Israel, reviewing Israel’s Association Agreement
with the EU, all of which after the Palestinian people have been dispossessed, dehumanized, displaced, massacred and their land looted and confiscated. Isn't it a bit too late to correct the only other 20th-century crime to match the Holocaust, namely the Nakba? Only time and behavior will tell.
According to Hugh Lovatt, senior policy fellow with the Berlin-based European Council on Foreign
Relations (ECFR), “Israel’s
ties with the EU are under unprecedented stress at this point in time.” The EU's position has radically changed from the unwavering support Israel received Israel from European states ofter October 7 last year. This is eerily similar to the initial support the Americans received from the EU and the world after 9-11 in Afghanistan and Iraq, only to see that support eroded after the calamitious, poorly-executed US wars in those two countries turned into failure and absolute unmitigated disasters.
The Europeans have large immigrant populations from countries in the Near East, Africa and the Global South whose members are deeply sympathetic to the Palestinians' fight against their colonial Jewish European rapists: All these countries at one point or another in their history had to themselves fight off their own colonial rapists. Problem for Europe is that its aging population is forcing it to take on otherwise despised and unwanted lesser human migrants from the Global South. But these migrants are fundamentally changing the demographics of the old continent, with political consequences that will surely be nefarious for the Jewish colony in Palestine on the medium and long terms. While today's European governments still bear the stench of colonialism and antisemitism, and are therefore sympathetic to the little Jewish colony they founded in Palestine to rid themselves of their Jews, the demographic shift will inevitably lead to more sympathy for Palestine.
The Crusaders invaded Palestine a millennium ago for the same bullshit religious pretexts that the Zionists use in our time to justify the rape of Palestine. Yet, a couple of centuries later, the Europeans became fatigued militarily, financially and ideologically, and they slowly abandoned their Christian colony in Palestine. This precedent does not presage well for the Jewish colony in Palestine: At some point, as they've always done with their idiotic wars (against communism or against terrorism or against drugs...), westerners will tire of Israel and its endless Bronze Age violence and expansionist inanities against the native indigenous Palestinians, primarily because the West would have discovered other "interests" elsewhere, and because western populations would have acquired a darker hue of skin, a gentler view of those lesser human victims they colonized, and a hostile view of those annoying, constantly nagging, white supremacist colonial rapists known as Israelis.
This European irritation at Israel is getting more pronounced against the background of an impotent or colluding United States that fails to keep Israel on a leash of decent and civilized behavior. As has been always been the case with the dumb Americans, they inherit the problems created by the Europeans, then fail miserably at resolving them, while the Europeans wash their hands off the problem. Vietnam and Israel are the most (in)famous examples.
It took a full year of the Israelis killing and starving a captive Palestinian population in Gaza, and decades of Zionist settlers terrorizing the indigenous Palestinians and stealing their lands, before the Americans began waking up to reality. After imposing cosmetic sanctions on a handful of settlers (when the settler movement is in the hundreds of thousands of well organized, well funded terrorist organizations), they are now giving Israel 30 days to improve the
humanitarian situation in Gaza by allowing food and medicine to enter the concentration camp or "risk violating
US laws governing foreign military assistance." The vagueness and highly legalese language of the threat makes it a moot wimpy threat.
In veiled criticism of the US on Thursday, the EU’s foreign minister Josep Borrell said that too many people could die in that time. “The US has been saying to Israel that they have to improve humanitarian support to Gaza, but they gave one month delay,” the EU foreign policy chief told reporters ahead of a leaders’ summit, according to Reuters. “One month delay at the current pace of people being killed. It’s too many people,” Borrell said.
Many European governments and Joe Biden have been singing the tune of the so-called right by Israel to "self-defense", and immediately following it with the mild spineless reproach of Israel's self-defense being disproportionate and in
contradiction to international law. To a savage regime like the one of the ultra-orthodox Jewish terrorists of the Israeli government, this is a license to do more of the same. All these mild criticisms notwithstanding, no one has ever dared suggest that the radical Zionist Jews have an ulterior motive that follows a vicious circular logic: Terrorize the indigenous Palestinians and steal their lands; the Palestinians naturally resist; the Zionists use this otherwise legitimate resistance as an excuse to "defend" itself, claim victimhood and terrorize and steal more land; the Palestinians resist some more; the Zionists terrorize and steal more land; and so on and so forth, the Zionist plan being to one day annihilate all the Palestinians and complete the ethnic cleansing of Palestine. The Palestine question is the only colonial project thoughout history in which the colonial rapist demands protection from its raped victim.
The Europeans appear to have been jolted by the deliberate attacks and terrorist threats Israel has mounted against the mostly European UN force (UNIFIL) in south Lebanon. Israel has repeatedly attacked UNRWA, the international refugee organization caring for the millions of Palestinians made refugees by Israel itself, killing hundreds of its members in Gaza. Israel is now demanding that UNIFIL leaves south Lebanon because UNIFIL is the only remaining impartial witness on the ground to the full-fledged ethnic cleansing Israel wants to perpetrate there, and because any other local observer is by Israel's definition a biased lying "terrorist".
The diplomatic spat between Israel and some European leaders burst into the open this week. In remarks that drew a sharp response from Israel, French President Macron said in a cabinet meeting Tuesday that “Netanyahu must not forget that his country was created by a decision of the UN.” Macron was referring to UN Resolution 181, known as the Partition Plan, which forcibly created a colonial non-indigenous Jewish state on Palestinian land in 1947. The French president had earlier called for the complete suspension of arms sales to Israel, even though France does not supply weapons, only some minor spare parts, to Israel.
Israel has, in its usual "Holocaust" blackmail posturing, repeatedly accused the UN, its secretary general Antonio Guterres, and European countries of antisemitism. Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also condemned Israel’s actions in Lebanon, including an Israeli military strike that hit a UN peacekeeping base where around 1,100 Italian troops are stationed.
Italy is the third largest supplier of arms to Israel, providing the Jewish state with helicopters and guns, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). However, following the start of the war in Gaza, Italy suspended all new export licenses and canceled any agreements signed after October 7. This policy is “much more restrictive than that applied by our partners - France, Germany and United Kingdom,” Meloni said, according to ANSA. “We have blocked everything.”
Among the harshest critics of Israel have been the Irish and Spanish leaders, who have called on the EU to review its Association Agreement with Israel, saying the Jewish state is breaching the trade deal’s human rights clause in its Gaza war. Changing the agreement would be very damaging to Israel as it concerns trade relations. The EU is Israel’s biggest trade partner, with trade between Israel and the bloc totaling $50.7 billion in 2022. In an earlier move that protested Israel’s war in Gaza, Spain, Ireland and Norway formally recognized Palestinian statehood in May.
Last month, the UK suspended 30 of its 350 arms export licenses with Israel over risks of such weapons being used to commit serious violations of international humanitarian law. The decision was rebuked by Israeli officials.
For its part, Germany is generally the exception to European policy because it bears the terrible guilt of leading Fascist Europe during WWII in perpetrating the Holocaust. As a result, Germany is like a tamed poodle that can't even bark when it comes to Israel. Right now, Germany is the second-largest supplier of weapons to Israel after the US, contributing some 30% of Israel’s arms in 2023. In euphemistic language, German politicians, many of whom retain solid Nazi ideas, have repeatedly stated that Israel’s security is Germany’s "Raison d'Etat" (reason of state), which means that regardless of the horrors the Israelis, mostly German Jews who fled the Nazis, inflict on the Palestinians, Germany has adopted a hypocritical cowardly vow of silence and a "see-nothing, hear-nothing, say-nothing" policy. An estimated 45% of Germans polled in 2023 expressed opinions on the far-right of the political spectrum, which explains the successes of the neo-Nazi Afd (Alternativ Fur Deutschland) party in the last elections.
The Germans are hiding behind their "Raison d'Etat" pretext to violate all their obligations under international laws. In so doing, those residual Nazis are subcontracting the genocide of Palestinians to their own former Jewish citizens.
I am so grateful that you do not live in Beirut.
ReplyDeleteOh that is so kind of you to be concerned. Thank you. In return, I wish that you are able to return to your settlement and massacre more indigenous Palestinians under orders from Yahweh. All the best.
