Israeli People are Jeopardizing their Own Future

Israel-Hamas War : Is there anyone who believes that Israelis will live in peace after the irreparable has been done?”

Dominique Eddé

By approving the war of their government in Gaza, the Israeli people are jeopardizing their own future and world peace, according to Lebanese author Dominique Eddé in an opinion in “Le Monde.”

We are witnessing the death of empathy and the triumph of censorship and powerlessness; the dissemination of monsters who give birth to each other. There is no greater alarm to the threat that is facing the world.

We are running out of qualifiers to describe the unfolding horror in Gaza. After hospitals, schools, churches, mosques, journalists (70 have been killed to date, according to the Committee for the Protection of Journalists), medical service and UN staff (136 killed according to Antonio Guterres, UN Secretary General), it is now the turn of cemeteries to be bombed.

How can we not conclude that there is a will to finish off an entire people, and not just Hamas? Israeli officials themselves do not deny it. The Israeli daily Hayom tells that the objective of Israel’s prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, as related by his adviser Ron Dermer, is to “Reduce the Gaza population to its lowest possible level.” One cannot be any clearer.

In the hundreds of thousands, the people in North Gaza have been summoned to seek shelter in the south. They have been urged to pile up at the gate of their own land, in Rafah. Is the next step such a mystery?

The bulk of Israeli public opinion is stubbornly avoiding facing up to the fact that it is approving a policy which, under the pretext of protecting itself, is in fact taking away its own future. The war against Hamas as presented by the government serves a ruthless plan of destruction, elimination, and annexation. The Palestinians will survive, just as they have survived for the past 75 years. But at what price for them, for Israel, and for world peace?

The monumental responsibility of the United States

How many children should be killed, amputated, sacrificed for the capture of one militiaman? How many families should be exterminated? How many longings for life are being transformed into desires to kill.

Every day, every hour, every minute is one too many for Gaza and for the rest of the world. Here in Lebanon and the neighboring countries, all minds are keeling over. Every single one, into hatred, rage and mourning. In this physical and mental carnage, the responsibility of the policy of the United States is monumental.
