Joe Biden is Alienating Millions of Young Voters’ with Blind Support to Israel
Joe Biden is set to alienate millions of young voters, and potentially lose the 2024 election to Donald Trump, unless he calls for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, young generation pressure groups have warned.
Sending the US president a “stark and unmistakable warning”, activist leaders said that the administration’s “stance on Gaza risks millions of young voters staying home or voting third party next year”.
In an open letter to Biden, signed by 10 organizations including Gen-Z for Change, formerly called TikTok for Biden, the groups said they had “mobilized the record youth turnout in 2020 that pushed your ticket over the finish line”.
They added: “We did not spend hours upon hours knocking doors and making calls to turn out the vote so that you could support indiscriminate slaughter of civilians and violations of international law.”
The groups told Biden that he cannot win in 2024 by “only telling our generation that you are the lesser of two evils” and said that his position is “badly out of step” with young voters, adding: “There is no way for a Democratic presidential nominee to win without significant youth voter enthusiasm and mobilization.”
They urged the president to “use every tool available to you to broker a ceasefire now and to revive the peace process”.
A poll by Quinnipiac University found that about half of voters under 35 do not support sending weapons and military equipment to Israel.
Christopher Galdieri, a professor of politics at Saint Anselm College in New Hampshire, said that while youth who are put off voting for Biden would not switch to Donald Trump should he win the Republican nomination, it “could be just as dangerous” if they stay at home.
He said: “It doesn’t take a wholesale collapse in youth support to potentially have a big impact.”
