President Donald Trump may be more quickly approaching his lame-duck era following GOP electoral losses this week, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Conservative radio talk-show host Erick Erickson on X posted: “Lame duck status is going to come even faster now. Trump cannot turn out the vote unless he is on the ballot, and that is never happening again.”

The post has been viewed more than 250,000 times.

The comment comes after democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani won the New York City mayoral election on the same night that the GOP took gut-punch losses in gubernatorial races in New Jersey and Virginia.

Democrats also scored well in judicial contests in Pennsylvania.

Trump himself on Truth Social said that his absence from the ballot on Tuesday night was a factor in the GOP losses. Trump also blamed the ongoing government shutdown.

MAGA architect Steve Bannon in an interview with Politico said that Mamdani in a Trump-like move was able to bring “low-propensity” voters, those who don’t always turn out, to the polls.

Trump was able to do that in his two presidential wins but is precluded by the 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution from running for a third term in 2028.

Also feeding into the lame-duck talk is the fact that Trump has already spoken about how he thinks a 2028 GOP presidential ticket consisting of Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio would be formidable.

Next year’s mid-term elections also present a challenge. The GOP will be looking to maintain control of Congress, but the party that holds the White House traditionally suffers losses in mid-term elections.

But some on X pushed back against Erickson.

“So, this is about the 45th time that ‘it’s all over for Trump,’ right?” wrote one.

Wrote another, “We don’t need advice from a never Trumper.”
