Amid jeopardizing America's relationships with long-standing allies, Veteran Affairs layoffs, a government shutdown, and — among many other things — deploying troops to intimidate the American people, here's how active military members and veterans are reacting:
"It's very disheartening! A tear rolled down my face when this president approved of an insurrection. After serving 23 years as a Marine and loving my time and this country, it is just so sad that we would elect such a horrible moral compass of a human being. My politics doesn't matter to me more than a moral leader, and President Trump is just a bad person. And that type of person with that type of power is a dangerous thing for us all. While they sow cultural and social conflict among us, they rob us blind of the funds we tender every paycheck. God bless us, and please keep us through this madness."—Bryan, 60, Florida

"I served five years on active duty in the late '60s and early '70s. I'm disappointed that Trump didn't win in 2020, because now we'd be past him. While I agree with many things that he's done, he gets harder to accept as each day goes on, primarily because he is just one despicable human being."—Anonymous
"I spent 25 years in the Navy, retiring as a W-4. Donald Trump is an unmitigated disaster. This country may never recover from his presidency. I come from a military family: my dad spent four years in the Navy during WWII and 26 years in the Air Force, and my youngest brother spent 20 years in the Air Force. Our family has a total of 75 years of service to our country. Now, according to MAGA, because we don't support Trump, we hate America. I don't understand how or when I became the enemy. I fear for the futures of my children and grandchildren."—Richard, 70, California
"I'm a 74-year-old Air Force veteran. Morale was pretty bad back then, so I can only imagine how bad it must be now. I wouldn't advise anyone to enlist in today's military. It's unthinkable how any veteran could support this Nazi-like regime."—stylishlatte707
"I served four years of active duty from 1970–1974, and one year as an air traffic controller in the USAF. I am a woman and was very proud to have served my country. I am also an immigrant, and I feel grateful to this wonderful country. However, I am now very concerned about where the MAGA movement is taking us. This president and all of his minions are cruel and only interested in acquiring and keeping power, as well as increasing their wealth."—quirkyadmiral957
"Army veteran of 10 years here. Everyone I know thinks I'm overreacting, but the way this current administration is practicing — not declaring — Martial Law ought to freak everyone out. It's not one step closer to fascism; it is fascism. Round up people in the streets while hiding your face means you know you're doing wrong, but they do it anyway. Labeling fellow Americans as anything other than fellow Americans is needlessly stoking a fire, unless your intent is to break America." —Anonymous
"I supported President Trump in his first and second campaigns. I believe in much of what he has done and tries to do for this country, but I cannot support a convicted felon as president. He could have prevented the violence on January 6 if he had just stood and said stop. He didn't. Instead of peacefully calling on Americans to work together, he encouraged violence and hate. I served my country for over 30 years during war and peace, and this needs to stop."—Anonymous
"As a Viet vet, my observation is that Trump doesn't have the slightest respect for the military, except to do his dirty work so he can become a dictator. Pete Hegseth is just a willing toadie in this effort. I feel my oath still stands, and I do believe at some point that it may be put to the test. At 77, I'm willing to do what I can when the time comes." —youngcloud79

"As a former member of the military (Air Force and Navy), I also took that same oath to defend the Constitution of the United States, against all enemies, foreign and domestic. Please, open your eyes and your brain, and actually see and hear what's going on. This country is on the cusp of what transpired in 1934 Germany. Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither was the United States. When Nero took over Rome, it subsequently went up in a ball of flames, just like Germany did — each because a bunch of spineless politicians did nothing but bend the knee and kiss the ring. It would be nice to see this country continue as a democracy and not flame out." —youngskeleton9524
"I'm an Army veteran who served from 1969–1972. My father, uncles, and cousins all served. I took an oath to protect, defend, and uphold the Constitution, and that fat, unpatriotic, lying, thieving, self-interested predator said the 'same words' and meant none of it. I took my flag down last November, and it won't go back up until he's out of office. He cares only about himself, and the rest of the MAGA world licks his balls and continues to lie and enable him. I'm 76 and dread the country I'll be leaving to my kids and grandkids."

"The current White House administration is the worst one in my life. I served four years in the Navy from 1989–1993, including in the first Gulf War. I am currently hosting my ninth PEACEFUL protest since January of this year. I have met about 1,000 amazing fellow Americans doing these protests, and we will continue fighting together until this maniac is driven out of office. We will not stop until it's done. They say we are 'America haters,' but everyone knows that that is total self-projection. I feel sorry for his cult followers, but when their lives are destroyed because of him either later this year or sometime next year, my newfound friends and I will be there to help pick them up." —Brian, 65, Ohio

"I was in the Air Force from 1968–1972. I wasn't the best soldier, but the one thing that has stayed with me is a commitment to the Constitution. Listening to some of these military guys is disgusting. Biden's presidency had a few flaws, but one of them was not putting neighbor against neighbor or stealing top-secret documents. Trump constantly lies about everything, and these people lap it up with a spoon. Talk about delusional! Facts do matter, and they should try to pay attention to them and learn how to tell the difference between facts and gaslighting." —maskedcowboy7835
"I'm a 68-year-old veteran, and my active duty began in 1976 and ended in 1980. I have been a registered Republican my whole adult life, and I plan to remain one until the day I die. That said, I'm not a supporter of our current Republican leadership. For many years, I've watched people use small differences in ideas and preferences to divide our nation, and each election cycle has built up this division and has driven a wedge between the people — to the point of fellow Americans seeing other fellow Americans as enemies. This is something we've done to ourselves, and the fault belongs to all of us. Until we have leaders who will focus on what is best for everybody, we will continue to disintegrate as a society, and this country will collapse. The future is ours to choose; let's choose unity."

"As a Vietnam Army veteran, I am very worried about how this administration is pursuing the use of military force. I think we need to remember that after WWII, we had war crimes trials, and 'orders were orders' was not a defense. My worry is that after the Trump administration, we may be looking at war crimes for our own military. I wonder about the position this administration may be putting our servicemen and women in should that happen." —artisticsealion828

"I can't believe that anyone who calls themselves a veteran would follow this fool. We all took an oath to the Constitution, not to the president. I served under Nixon, but I didn't serve him; I served the Constitution. Trump makes Nixon look like a mere jaywalker. Any veteran who votes or supports Trump is a hypocrite. Either that, or they're just ignorant and uninformed. If you take the time to research what Trump has done, what he's doing, and what he's planning on doing, you'll realize that he has to be stopped. If you love this country and you value democracy, don't support this jerk. He's a con man, and if you believe him, you've been conned. Do the research." —Dan, 72, Ohio
