The Cuyahoga (Ohio) County Prosecutor’s Office announced charges against two children on Wednesday who are accused of physically and sexually assaulting a 5-year-old girl

The case went viral after the girl's mother took to social media seeking "justice" for her daughter

Officials charged the two children with attempted murder, four counts of rape, two counts of felonious assault, one count of kidnapping and another count of strangulation

After a mother’s message seeking “justice” gained national attention, authorities in Cleveland have announced that two children, ages 9 and 10, are facing charges in connection with allegedly assaulting, raping and scalping her 5-year-old daughter earlier this month.

The Cuyahoga County Prosecutor’s Office announced charges on Wednesday against the two juvenile suspects, who prosecutors described as “a 10-year-old female and a 9-year-old male.”

Officials said the two children have both been charged with attempted murder, four counts of rape, two counts of felonious assault, one count of kidnapping and another count of strangulation.

The charges stem from a Sept. 13 incident that recently went viral and gained national media attention after the 5-year-old girl’s mother took to social media to share what allegedly happened to her daughter.

Antavia Kennibrew wrote online that her daughter was allegedly lured from a family member’s home by a group of children on Sept. 13 and was missing until her family found her “unrecognizable” in a nearby field. The mother alleged the children physically and sexually assaulted her daughter in the field.

“What I saw was unbelievable,” Kennibrew told local WOIO in an interview last week. “My daughter was not my daughter. Her hair was scalped from her head. She had bruises and blood all over her body. Her eyes were filled with blood. Her lips and mouth were filled with blood. Her nails had debris and dirt in it.”

PEOPLE is not identifying the child due to her age and the sensitive nature of the allegations.

Cleveland Police would not comment further on the investigation but wrote on social media last week that its “Sex Crimes and Child Abuse Unit is actively investigating a matter involving multiple children under the age of 10, both as victims and as suspects.”

Kennibrew alleged in her interview with WOIO that the group of attacking children left her 5-year-old daughter unconscious in the field following the assault, writing that the children beat her daughter until she was knocked out and then urinated on her. She also alleged the children tried to strangle her with her shirt and had sexually assaulted her.

The mother told WOIO that her daughter “is not the same” after the alleged attack last month.

“She is having behavioral problems,” Kennibrew said. “She is mentally not OK. I am mentally not OK. Me not getting justice for my daughter makes me feel like I failed her.”
